With every aspect of hands-on training, the student will also study theory subjects that are relative. For instance, before you begin to perform facial services, you will need to understand the anatomy and chemistry that will be involved with that process. Below, are some examples of definitions a student may learn in beauty school / esthetician college. Go briefly over them, then take the short quiz at the end to see how fun theory (written subjects) can be. The following includes hairdressing as well as esthetics definitions:Aesthetician: a specialist in aesthetics; also esthetician. Apex: the highest point or summit; in cosmetology this is the top of one’s head. Depilatory: a substance used to destroy the hair; has the capacity to remove hair. Degrees of decolorization: the series or steps of decolorization the hair goes through as the melanin changes in a scale of intensity. Diathermy: a method of producing heat in body tissues using high-frequency electrical currents. Effleurage: a delicate stroking movement in massage. Fulling: a massage motion where the arm or leg is rolled back and forth between the practitioner’s hands. Galvanic Current: a direct and steady current having a positive and a negative pole; improves the penetration of nutrition products for the skin. Ionization: to become changed into the form of ions; in facial treatments this aids in the absorption of cosmetic products into the skin, with the use of electric current. Keratin: a protein responsible for 97 percent of the makeup of hair. Lancet: a small, sharp and very pointed, double edged surgical blade used by estheticians to pierce a small elevation of the skin known as a papule. Miscible: mixable; the property of certain liquids to mix with each other. Ohm’s law: the law stating that the current in an electric circuit is equal to the pressure divided by the resistance. |
